The state I'm in is so unsteady
I burn with ardor yet shriver with cold,
I laugh while crying, without a reason,
I embrace the whole world and hold nothing.
All that I feel is in confusion;
my soul spews fire, my eyes a river;
I hope one moment, the next I waver;
now I'm lucid, now delirious.
Though bound to earth, I fly up to Heaven;
in a day I find a thousand years
but not in thousand years, one day.
Shoul someone ask why I act this way,
I'll say I don't know, though I suspect
it's only because I saw you, Lady.

The Peace Of Wild Things
When despair grows in me
and I wake in the middle of the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting for their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free

The Flower Garden
A blur of color in the wind
Fertile soil as nature’s palette
A fragrance so seductive we think of sin

A gardener’s work must begin
Work the soil before he sees
A blur of color in the wind
Damp earth the gardener’s canvas
Spring warmth brings the seed to sprout
A fragrance so seductive we think of sin
A fiery sun nurtures the seed to begin
Emerald leaves open to feed and bring
A blur of colour in the wind
A palace of wild beauty within
The gardeners reward of toil is
A fragrance so seductive we think of sin
And within this plot of raging color
The worker’s castle for months to stay
A blur of color in the wind
A fragrance so seductive we think of sin.

LOST WITHOUT THE MOON

Where has this moon gone?
the moon that used to brighten up
the night sky,
And the moon that used to shine
Brighter than any star,
The moon that used to bring to me
This beautiful light,
For this moon used to lighten up
My heart,
Now that this moon is gone
I must rely on the stars
to bring me light,
This moon left me alone,
alone to suffer and think,
empty thoughts,
empty thoughts,
And now i know that
I am lost,
Oh where has this moon gone?

Love is...
Love is a fire that burns unseen,
a wound that hurts yet isn't felt,
an always discontent contentment,
pain that ranges witthout hurting,
a longing for nothing but too long,
loneliness in the midst of people,
never feeling pleased when pleased,
a passion that gains when lost in thought.
It's freely wanting to be enslaved;
it's counting your defeat a victory;
it's staying loyal to your killer.
But if so self-contraditory,
how canLove, when Love chooses,
bring human hearts into sympathy?
This is what Camões, our greatest poet, thought and said about Love.
Translated by Richard Zenith

Listen.
Listen to me;
I'll listen to you.
I can see
Beauty in you.
Don't be afraid.
Don't run into the shade.
Come out and face the Sun.
The future is waiting
For you.
Don't say, my dear,
That there's nothing for you here;
Life shouldn't be some
Unrelenting menagerie.
They put thoughts in your head;
Words in your mouth.
They advise you on how to think,
And in time it all goes south
And tumbles into the sea.
This is what might be.
They say: 'This is what will be
If your eyes fail to see.
'Don't say, my dear,
That here's nothing for you here;
Life shouldn't be some
Unrelenting menagerie.

Still I rise
Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
Maya Angelou
I swear: I'll rise!
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear

Hi ,Tiago!
Do not stand at my grave and weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!

The Fussy Eater
Mum calls me 'the fussy eater'
Because I won't eat peas,
I find carrots make me queasy
And broccoli makes me sneeze.
We fight like mad at meal times
But I'm allowed to win
'Cause Mum knows I'll eat anything
If it comes in a tin.
Because I won't eat peas,
I find carrots make me queasy
And broccoli makes me sneeze.
We fight like mad at meal times
But I'm allowed to win
'Cause Mum knows I'll eat anything
If it comes in a tin.

Árvores do Alentejo
Horas mortas... Curvada aos pés do Monte
A planície é um brasido e, torturadas,
As árvores sangrentas, revoltadas,
Gritam a Deus a benção duma fonte!
E quando, manhã alta, o sol posponte
A oiro a giesta, a arder, pelas estradas,
Esfíngicas, recortam desgrenhadas
Os trágicos perfis no horizonte!
Árvores! Corações, almas que choram,
Almas iguais à minha, almas que imploram
Em vão remédio para tanta mágoa!
Árvores! Não choreis!
Olhai e vede:Também ando a gritar, morta de sede,
Pedindo a Deus a minha gota de água!

I Want To Change The world
I want to change the world
I want to impact it so deep
That I reach the core
I want to change the meaning of peace
To something permanent
I want to open doors
And shut out doubt
I want the past to dissolve
It makes my ears bleed
Mistakes linked in memory
Times so hard the world shakes in its boots
I want to change the world
The sun rises and then sets
But leaves its mark before it goes
It creates life and growth
The moon brings serenity and mystery
Both bring death too
I want the growth to shine through
But erase the death
I want to change the world
But I would not dare change the past

ABANDONED LOVE (Bob Dylan)
My patron saint is a-fighting with a ghost
He's always off somewhere when I need him most.
The Spanish moon is rising on the hill
But my heart is a-tellin' me I love ya still.
I come back to the town from the flaming moon
I see you in the streets, I begin to swoon.
I love to see you dress before the mirror
Won't you let me in your room one time 'fore I finally disappear?
Everybody's wearing a disguise
To hide what they've got left behind their eyes.
But me, I can't cover what I am
Wherever the children go I'll follow them.
I march in the parade of liberty
But as long as I love you I'm not free.
How long must I suffer such abuse
Won't you let me see you smile one time before I turn you loose?
I've given up the game, I've got to leave,
The pot of gold is only make-believe.
The treasure can't be found by men who search
Whose gods are dead and whose queens are in the church.
We sat in an empty theater and we kissed,
I asked ya please to cross me off-a your list.
My head tells me it's time to make a change
But my heart is telling me I love ya but you're strange.
One more time at midnight, near the wall
Take off your heavy make-up and your shawl.
Won't you descend from the throne, from where you sit?
Let me feel your love one more time before I abandon it.
He's always off somewhere when I need him most.

Mother Christmas
The birth of Christ
Is the reason for the day
Santa Claus does his part
In his magical way
Rudolf and the other reindeer
Pull the loaded sleigh
Decorations and lights
Put Christmas on display
And festive songs and carols
Have a part to play
But it takes a mother
To make it a very special day

Amor, que o gesto humano na alma escreve

Amor, que o gesto humano na alma escreve,
Vivas faíscas me mostrou um dia,
Causa o primeiro efeito; o pensamento

É seres alma, e sangue, e vida em mim
E dizê-lo cantando a toda a gente!

Dedicated to all ants I know!
The Ants, poem by Douglas Florian
Ants are scantily
Half an inch long,
But for their size
They're very strong.
Ants tote leaves
Five times their weight
Back to their nest
At a speedy rate.
They walk on tree limbs
Upside down
A hundred feet
Above the ground,
While down below
Beneath a mound
They're building tunnels
Underground.
And so it's been
And it will be
Since greatest
Ant antiquity.

Time to read poetry again
Wait on! Yes, I fell on that desert strand, at that dread hour
Which God concedes to his own
For the interval in which the soul is steeped
In dreams which themselves are God.
But what matters the sandy shore, and death and misadventure,
If I kept myself with God?
It is He that I dreamed myself as who is everlasting,
It is as This One that I shall return.
Fernando Pessoa, in Message, translated by Mike Harland
A legend tells that the young King Sebastian didn't die in Alcacer-Quibir ans that one foggy morning he may return. That's why we Portuguese People are so good at waiting. All the solutions will be brought by Sebastian. Eça de Queirós said that even the lottery is a kind of sebastianism!

How dare I?
I imagined one of Sophia's beautiful poems in English...
I won't hurt you with my poems
My eyes stop when I think of you
I won't take my regret to make a song
There’ll be trees and skies but no poems
Too human to be told
Your world was simple and hard
daily and limpid
Sophia loved the sea! She even wrote that after her death she would come and take all the moments that she hadn't lived by the sea! Only a poet could say so.
I won't hurt you with my poems
My eyes stop when I think of you
I won't take my regret to make a song
There’ll be trees and skies but no poems
Too human to be told
Your world was simple and hard
daily and limpid
