Black Cat, White Cat is a Yugoslavian Romantic comedy film directed by Emir Kusturica in 1998. It won the Silver Lion for Best Direction at the Venice Film Festival.The literal translation of the title is actually "Black cat, white tomcat". The movie characters speak in Romani Serbian and Bulgarian - frequently switching between them. Some of the film's plot points and scenery are strongly inspired by an influential Italian comics series, Alan Ford by Roberto Raviola and Luciano Secchi. Kusturica was born in 1954 in Sarajevo. Graduated film directing at the prestigious Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU) in Prague in 1978. During the studies, awarded several times for his short movies including Guernica (1978) which took first prize at Student's Film Festival in Karlovy Vary.
